Various medical devices<\/a> exist for seniors, including vision aids\u00a0and mobility aids<\/a>, but some are more effective than others.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Medical alert systems<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Medical alert systems are a\u00a0safe, wearable device for senior citizens<\/a>\u00a0allowing them to receive emergency medical assistance just by the touch of a button.\u00a0They are particularly effective for those individuals who live alone. It\u2019s reported that the global market for medical alert systems in\u00a02013 was 1.23 billion U.S. dollars\u00a0<\/a>and it\u2019s estimated that this will increase to two billion U.S. dollars by 2020. The range and prices of medical alert systems vary, so it’s important to carry out thorough research to select the best product for individual needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Mobility aids<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

According to data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), from 1991 to 2002, 77% of emergency room visits associated with falls were for those of 75 years of age or above, while those aged between 65 to 74 had a lower proportion of falls at 59%. The reasons for falls were ascending or descending stairs, falling when moving from sitting to standing, or vice versa, or from furniture or from the bath. Therefore, depending on individual needs, a walking frame, wheelchair, or another supportive device may be required. There are various sit to stand devices to aid weight bearing and avoid potential injury, as well as walking frames for support and battery powered bath devices to allow structured support for bathing.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Stair lifts<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

For those with restricted mobility and stairs at home, a stair lift can give the freedom and ease of using the stairs. These can be expensive and there are may designs and brands to select from, but having independence and freedom of movement is important when living alone. If the investment of buying one is too expensive, they are available to rent.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Automatic pill reminders<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

For individuals who live alone and are on medication, it may be easy to forget to take pills at the right time. There are various automatic pill dispensers on the market which will prompt the individual when to take their medication. When purchasing one,\u00a0it\u2019s best to look at certain factors<\/a>\u00a0such as the ease of use, whether it holds multiple medications, how and when the alerts are given, and whether a lockable device is required. Another consideration is whether a main operated dispenser is required with a battery back up, or just a battery operated device.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>

Living alone may be preferred or there may not be any other options, but it’s important to ensure that while living alone, seniors have as much independence as they can. It’s also important that their safety is considered and various devices can aid this independent lifestyle. Medical alerts, mobility aids, stair lifts, and pill reminders are just some of the safe ways to help keep seniors living alone safe and confident.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>
