You or your children can&#8217;t catch this skin disease by coming in contact with someone who has it.<\/p><p>Eczema runs in families. That suggests a genetic role in eczema&#8217;s development. A significant risk factor is having relatives who have or had:<\/p><p>\u2022 Asthma<\/p><p>\u2022 Eczema<\/p><p>\u2022 Seasonal allergies<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>Doctors also know that a large percentage of children with severe eczema will later develop asthma or other allergies.<\/p><p>Children are more at risk of developing eczema if they:<\/p><p>\u2022 Are in higher social classes<\/p><p>\u2022 Live in colder climates<\/p><p>\u2022 Stay in urban areas with higher levels of pollution<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>Eczema is not an allergic reaction. Before removing particular foods from your diet, talk with your healthcare provider.<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p><strong>Triggers in Eczema<\/strong><\/p><p>A trigger does not cause eczema. However, it can lead to a flare or make it worse. Common triggers are those that irritate the skin.<\/p><p>For example, in many people with eczema, wool or human-made fibers trigger a flare when it comes in contact with the skin. Other examples of things that can irritate the skin include:<\/p><p>\u2022 Chlorine<\/p><p>\u2022 Cigarette smoke<\/p><p>\u2022 Dust<\/p><p>\u2022 Makeup<\/p><p>\u2022 Perfume<\/p><p>\u2022 Sand<\/p><p>\u2022 Soaps and other cleansers<\/p><p>\u2022 Solvents<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>Certain conditions that affect the immune system can also trigger flares. Things that can trigger or worsen a flare include:<\/p><p>\u2022 Bacterial infection<\/p><p>\u2022 Cold or flu<\/p><p>\u2022 Mold<\/p><p>\u2022 Pets<\/p><p>\u2022 Pollen<\/p><p>\u2022 Stress<\/p><p>&nbsp;<\/p><p>Actions and environments that cause dry skin can trigger flares.
